The 8 winds

Originating from centuries-old Buddhist texts and teachings, the 8 winds represent 4 pairs of "conditions" that all human beings experience. No one is immune.

These winds have a great purpose. They invite us into mindful observation and appreciation of present reality--of what is.

By learning to remain grounded and steady, we learn that there is an "I", a self, who remains unchanged despite the mighty winds.

Unchanged? Yes. How?

By observing and understanding that the winds are typical and temporal. Unless you cling tightly or argue with the winds, you will notice that they come and they go.

Here are the 8 winds:

• Gain and Loss: Material wealth, opportunities, or possessions coming and going.

• Pleasure and Pain: Physical, psychological, or emotional comfort and discomfort.

• Praise and Blame: Receiving compliments versus facing criticism or disapproval.

• Fame and Disrepute: Having a good reputation and social standing versus being disgraced or ignored.

Pausing and reflecting on these pairs, reminds us that in this particular dimension of space and time, we are here to master the winds of change.
